Our Children of the World (COTW) Series brought to you by Deb Wood, continues with our third little child, “Maja Linn”. Maja is our Caucasian child in this series, with a special Swedish theme. With this child we are featuring the cultural and traditional costuming from the Midsummer Festival, celebrated in Sweden each year!

A special method of wigging with quality mohair will be included in this class, including instructions on dyeing your own mohair, creating highlights and lowlights! In using this special method of wigging, it makes it possible to style her hair in several ways, including braids or a ponytail. Her hairline is complete all around her head.

These figures are busts, with an overall height of about 4” for the head, and about 8” for the head and shoulders. These busts are displayed on a pedestal base. Because we are only sculpting the head and shoulders, we can really concentrate on the subtle differences in the facial features and bone structure of these children of different races and countries.

In addition to sculpting the face and shoulders, you will get the instructions and pattern for creating the traditional Swedish costume and floral wreath headpiece.

Class Synopsis:

1. Study of the skull structure for the different races and creating the armature for the sculpture. Discussion of facial features and their placement. Covering the armature with a foundation layer of clay and baking, so it’s ready for the next lesson. Deciding on a pedestal base and getting that set up.

2. A discussion of skin tone and mixing clay to achieve this color, covering the armature with skin clay and beginning to sculpt the features.

3. Finishing sculpting the features and discussion on chalking and other skin tinting.

4. Final touches on the bust and then adding details with paints or washes. Preparing for wigging. Learn a new wigging technique.

5. Wigging, accessories and costuming.

So do come and join us in creating this little girl, Maja Linn and let your Inner Child come out and play. Miki Kioko is the second in the series, and Tamarika, the first COTW both will still be available and will remain available throughout the whole series. With each class I will be introducing you to new products and supplies and sources that you might not otherwise be familiar with.

These busts could be adapted into full figured dolls, with an overall height of about 24”. (That information is not included in this series however)
