Thoroughly Modern Millinery, Creating Period Hats from Modern Materials with Stephen Alan Rausch

In this class we will be making an Edwardian Afternoon Hat which will work you step-by-step through my techniques for making period hats from EVA foam (commercially know as Memory Foam or, in the craft-supply industry, Craft Foam). The beauty of this material is that it is very durable, light-weight and resilient. By using this hat pattern and the construction process as an example, you will learn how to pattern and construct almost any style of hat that you can imagine. In addition to creating and covering the basic hat foundation, you will also learn my techniques for making lovely, almost-realistic, feathers from satin ribbon; two ways to create dainty ribbon roses; and fashioning some interesting bows and ribbon hat ornaments. Along the way, I will also give you a lesson on the history of hats and some interesting, yet useless, anecdotes about hats and the origins of hat-related phrases that have worked their way into our everyday language. So please join me for this interesting and exciting journey into the world of millinery for the art doll.
